Church Marketing Ideas, Experiments, Lessons and Pitfalls For Right Now (yes, now!) and the Future.
This week, I picked up on a topic that has been floating around Liquid Church’s iCampus which has been stuck in my mind.
So today, I wanted to start a conversation about the nuances in language we encounter so often in our conversations regarding church and faith.
Take a look at this video and join the conversation by leaving a comment below!

That’s a very interesting question, the connotations of the words religious and Christian. In my experience ‘religious’ is a much tamer word than Christian. It’s unlikely to offend anyone but also makes me think that the beliefs aren’t that strongly held. Not that that’s necessarily true, just how it comes across. Another interesting word to explore is ‘spiritual.’ It also gets tossed around a lot without any distinctive significance.
Religious don’t have a good connotation for me. It’s usually associated with being fanatical, ignoring logic and going after “blind” faith.
Christian on the other hand is much softer. It’s a much more personal way of talking about someone or their beliefs. You think Good Samaritan, compassionate help without expecting anything in return.
Although if you’re labeled as Christian, the bar is gets set so high immeidately. And if you do anything “unChristian” then criticism is so easy to sling against that person.
Kenny – nice work bro! Love the video. Also love how you are rolling this stuff out there.
Thanks also for the props regarding celebrating our service team peeps. They are the church (in it’s most truest form) and love to celebrate that.
If you are ever in NB PLEASE make sure to introduce yourself. Would love to meet you in person.
